being authentic in a socially connected world
February 26, 2018have any of you been feeling kind of indifferent towards social media lately? i have and i really couldn't put my finger on it. just last week i told junior i wanted to take a break from blogging and social media. he of course thought i was being dramatic but i just couldn't pinpoint what i was feeling and why.
and then i heard of this new app called vero from a blogger i follow on instagram. i quickly downloaded the app and spent several hours of my sunday evening trying to figure it out. and let me yell you, i love it!
i've been feeling so weird about social media lately and super unmotivated to share anything. i've been going back and forth with what i should post and when i should post. i was shadowbanned last week and have been receiving less and less engagement lately so i just kind of stopped posting. i haven't posted anything in four days and that doesn't seem like a long time, but for a blogger trying to stay consistent, that's a long time!
and so in comes vero! i just read their manifesto and i was like all of the yes!!!! and i just had to share it with you!
PEOPLE NATURALLY SEEK CONNECTION.i'm feeling like this has been the platform that i've been looking for! i haven't figured out the followers vs. connections feature yet. do i want connections? do i only want followers? i'm not sure! but with that, i would be able to control who i share what with. i can be authentic to my real life friends and family and share my dirty pile of laundry while still sharing my super curated #ootd's and #orellanatravels for brands to see. this seems like a win/win! (i just hope they have enough funding and manpower to fix all the glitches it's currently having due to the influx of new subscribers).
THAT’S WHY ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKS HAVE BEEN SO WIDELY ADOPTED OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS.
THEY OFFERED THE PROMISE OF CONSTANT CONNECTION AND THE MEANS TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH FRIENDS AND TO SHARE WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR LIVES.
BUT AS TIME PASSED, AN IMBALANCE BEGAN TO FORM BETWEEN THE INTERESTS OF THE PLATFORMS AND THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE USERS.
AND A FALSE SENSE OF CONNECTION LEFT US LONELIER THAN EVER.
IN REAL LIFE, PEOPLE ARE NEVER PRESENTED WITH A ONE SIZE FITS ALL AUDIENCE. WE SHARE DIFFERENT THINGS WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
MOST SOCIAL NETWORKS REDUCE EVERYONE TO A FRIEND OR A FOLLOWER. THIS ENCOURAGES US TO ONLY SHARE THE PARTS OF OUR LIVES WE THINK ARE THE MOST INTERESTING.
WHEN YOU CAN CONTROL WHO SEES WHAT, YOU CAN BEHAVE IN A WAY THAT IS MORE NATURAL, WHICH WE BELIEVE ENDS UP BEING BETTER FOR YOU.
SO WE DECIDED TO CREATE SOMETHING MORE AUTHENTIC.
WE CREATED A SOCIAL NETWORK THAT LETS YOU BE YOURSELF. HENCE THE NAME VERO. MEANING TRUTH.
WE MADE OUR BUSINESS MODEL SUBSCRIPTION-BASED.
MAKING OUR USERS OUR CUSTOMERS, NOT ADVERTISERS.
THE GREATEST SOCIAL NETWORK IS THE ONE THAT ALREADY EXISTS BETWEEN PEOPLE.
VERO'S MISSION IS TO MAKE IT AVAILABLE ONLINE.
THANKS FOR HELPING US BUILD A TRULY SOCIAL NETWORK.
i'm not going to say i'm quitting instagram or anything drastic like that!! but! i would like you to follow along on vero! i'm just figuring it out like everyone else but i really am loving it! i truly think it's the change in social media that we've been looking for!
what do you guys think? are you ready for a change as well?
